Distilled in 2018 from 50ppm peated malted barley, this Tsunuki single cask has been aged in sherry hogsheads in a stone warehouse, benefiting from minimal temperature variations, imparting a refined complexity over the years. Sherry hogshead casks, which have been used to age Andalusian wines, are slightly larger than conventional casks, and are renowned for their ability to mature longer, giving the whiskies richer, deeper aromas.
The Tsunuki distillery, established in the historic birthplace of the Hombo Shuzo brewery, carries on the heritage of the ancestral tradition of sake brewing and sweet potato shochu making, a specialty of Kagoshima. Located in a natural basin between the Kurata and Nagaya mountains, Tsunuki enjoys a climate that is unusual for southern Satsuma, with hot summers and cold winters.
